Welcome to the Oakes Laboratory at UCSF where we study Protein Folding Disorders (PFD) – a class of over 100 human diseases caused by the misfolding, aggregation and accumulation of protein in specific cells leading to their dysfunction. The list of PFD includes diabetes, retinitis pigmentosa, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, certain cancers, and many others which in total affect hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide.
